Sponsored Head Shave
Lee was challenged by Simon Metcalfe (in photo) to have his hair shaved off to see if it made a difference to Lee's ability to shoot! Lee has had an amazing year winning a medal at every competition he has entered, even achieving Silver at the National 3'ds & Bronze at the National Faces! Retained his Gold at Druids two day and South West Challenge (eight days competing out of nine), and winning the first South West Crown Class. So you can see why Simon wondered what his secret was and guessed his hair might be giving him an added advantage! So the fundraising started and the archery fraternity didn't let them down.
A target of £1000 was set and when that money had been raised the date would be made for Lee's first haircut for 25 years. Simon chose the Charity Cancer Research UK, as he was suffering with Cancer and by end of October the date was set for November 13th 2011. We travelled down to Muscovy Shoot, Liskeard - joined by fellow Barnstaple Archery Club members Pete Webb, Jason Quinn & Helen Cohen-Quinn. A very emotional experience as Simon's health had deteriorated but great enthusiasm by all attending. The video can be viewed on You Tube - Lee Phillips head shave for Cancer Research 2011 will entertain you for almost 16 minutes and these photos show Lee before and after, along side Simon.
Sadly, since the shaving, Simon has passed away, but not before knowing how much he had helped raise and knowing how much he meant to us all. A brilliant friend and archer, always smiling and egging us on. The grand total raised was £2175 and Simon and Lee would like to thank everyone for their contribution.
